What We Believe

"Do all the good you can,
By all the means you can,
In all the ways you can,
In all the places you can,
At all the times you can,
To all the people you can,
As long as ever you can.”
― John Wesley

Our Beliefs

God

We believe in one God, creator and sustainer of the universe. God is a mystery and we can know God through the glimpses we get of God's work throughout God's creation. We believe that God is at work in our lives to bring healing and wholeness, from the moment we are born, through our entire lives, in ways we can see it and in ways we can not. This is God's gift, we call it grace.

jesus

From UMC.org, "Jesus was Master, Rabbi, Teacher. He was the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He was the Doorway to the sheepfold, the Light of the world, the Prince of Peace, and more. In the church's long tradition, scores of other names or titles have been given." When we read about the life of Jesus, we see the heart of God, hear God's desire for our lives, and experience the call to follow. In Jesus we discover life, abundant and eternal.

the holy spirit

From UMC.org, "The Holy Spirit is God's present activity in our midst. When we sense God's leading, God's challenge, or God's support or comfort, we say that it's the Holy Spirit at work." As one of our creeds puts it, "We believe in the Holy Spirit, God present with us for guidance, for comfort, and for strength" (The United Methodist Hymnal, No. 884).

The Bible

The United Methodist Church affirms the Bible as the source of all that is “necessary” and “sufficient” unto salvation (Articles of Religion) and “is to be received through the Holy Spirit as the true rule and guide for faith and practice” (Confession of Faith). The Bible is a collection of books  written in multiple languages, gathered by faithful communities over a thousand year period, translated into many more languages, and into countless versions in many of those languages. This long journey culminates in the scriptures we have available to us today. We study the Bible to learn about God, and believe it contains all that is necessary to transform our lives into faithful, loving, grace filled disciples of Christ. As UMC.org states, "Tested by faith, proven by experience, these books have become sacred; they've become our rule for faith and practice."

Human Beings

The Kingdom of God

The Church

We start with the belief that God created human beings in God's image. When we encounter others, we are getting a glimpse of God's image. We believe God is at work in every persons life, and that we can choose to accept or reject God's nudging. We can look at the brokenness in the world around us to see clearly that we often reject God's perfect love. We turn our backs on the teachings of Jesus, causing harm to ourselves, our relationships, and our world. Even though we turn our backs on God, God never turns his back on us. God continues to speak into our lives, into our hearts, and into our relationships, wanting nothing more than for use to give our lives to the will of the one who created us.

Every week we pray, "Thy kingdom come," but what is the kingdom we are praying for? We believe that, "God goes before us, beckoning us into the new world that is already being created, calling us to join in the challenging work of fashioning it" (UMC.org). This new world we are called to create with God is the Kingdom of God.  The Kingdom of God is a kingdom of plenty, where peace reigns in all relationships, justice, goodness, and equality prevail, and all know that God is love. The way we live our lives, and the way we live together as a community, testifies to the Kingdom of God, which is paradoxically here and not here, now and not yet. So we, pray, we watch faithfully for moments of compassion, kindness, and love, we give our lives to God that the Kingdom might be present through us. As Easter people witness and serve, we take part in the Kingdom's dawning.
Thy Kingdom come!

The church is the body of Christ and it is a sign of God's reign. When we love like Jesus loved, the Kingdom of God is abundantly present and the world experiences Jesus in a very real, tangible way.  UMC.org says, "Imperfect as it is, the community of believers nevertheless provides the best clue we have to God's vision. Day after day, we see deeds of Christian courage, of compassion and reconciliation, of integrity in the face of temptation, and of witness for truth and justice." Together the community of faith is on a journey to bring God's love into view so all can live into the beauty of the Kingdom of God.
